Menu Plan: January 30 - February 5

This last week was rather busy, but not with anything that seems to have accomplished much. In any case, I am behind on my blogging and behind in a lot of other things here. Our Christmas party was a little smaller, as two of my knit night friends and their families were sick with colds. However, it was still a success, and it was fun just to hang out and eat and talk and have fun.

Jerome doesn't seem to be doing any better or worse with cheese, so I do suspect that the weather has influenced his skin. We will give it a try after we finish the round with cheese. It is the end of the Christmas season this week and we are three weeks before the first week of Lent and are getting ready for that. This week holds a few feasts, and the end of the infant narratives in our gospel readings. After this it is preparing for Christ's earthly and prophetic ministry. We are also getting ready for the type of supply chain challenges and price increases that seem to be exponentially growing more frequent. I encourage you to stock your pantries and freezers with foods that are lower priced in your price range and be ready. I think the world is going to get much harder for everyone, even than it has been over the past two years, and the foolish policies and decisions of our governors and legislatures are making the situation worse. Pray for all of us, and prepare so you can take care of your families and your neighbors, too. There is an urgent sense in me, but I am at peace, I hope you are also.

What is on your menu this week? If you want a recipe, ask and I will provide it as soon as I can. If there are any starred recipes, I will follow up separately with a weekly recipe round up on Saturday.

Menu Plan: January 23 - 29

We have about a week and a half left of the Christmas season, so we are squeezing in my Knit Night Christmas party this week. Our schedules were all catawampus and we couldn't get it in during the 12 Days, so we are having an end of Christmas party. I also have my sewing day this week, and I am determined to attend more frequently this year. There were so many I had to miss last year, and I really want to go, because a lot of the time, that day is the only day of sewing I have in a month.

The weather this week is still pretty frigid and there are rumors of another dump of snow, so we are still waiting on Jerome's reintroduction of foods. If we can get out from under this awful weather, we will take a break from the milk, and go directly to cheese and see how that affects him, before trying milk again.

Craft On: Belated Year End Review

Before I get to my accomplishments of 2021, I am so proud of the big accomplishment of this year. Alexander was married to his sweetheart, Autumn Rose, this weekend, and we couldn't be happier!

Right now, my knitting projects are in various stages of completion, but two of them needed to be frogged back a bit. One is just about on track, the other is waiting for a different yarn (I had been trying to convince myself that the two yarns were not as close in value as they were, but when trying to do stranded work, the colors were lost), and my sweater is progressing well.

2021 was even rougher on my crafting than 2020 was, but I feel a bit better and more on track to improve my productivity this year. One of my goals is to have no more than three projects active on needles at a time, with one design being written or edited each month. It would be great to catch up with all the ideas and sketches and almost finished designs I have. This is a big goal, I know, but I am hoping to get closer to it throughout the year. My reading goal is to get back to more spiritual and non-fiction books, rather than mostly light fiction, and to read a few classics that I either haven't read, or want to read again.

2021 Finished Objects

Hardly any knitting was finished this year, and no crochet. I honestly cannot remember when I finished a sewn top I made, so I don't know if it was 2020 or 2021. I have another hook and eye to sew into it, so maybe it isn't really finished at all. I'm pretty sure I sewed a matching scarf to that top this year, though.

As for my reading, we are this close to finishing Rainbow Valley. We will probably finish tomorrow. Likewise, I am actually, for real this time, almost finished with Desert Queen and can't wait to have my first books of the year listed in my sidebar.

2021 Books
(including read aloud books, but not picture books/story books)

Even though my crafting production went down, I almost doubled the books I read this year. That makes me happy and was a bit of a surprise.

Menu Plan: (Belated) January 16 - 22

Alexander and Autumn's wedding went of with a hitch! Thank you for your prayers! There were a few snafus, but not that the happy couple noticed, and they were so delighted to be married and had a wonderful time, so that is what matters. Fr. Jesse did a beautiful liturgy and emphasized so much how marriage is a sacrament to sanctify us and what it means to both the couple and the context of the Church and the world. Rich did the Gospel reading and served at the altar for the Eucharist, and neither of us cried, though he choked up and my chin quivered a little. We are so happy for them.

Because the weather is still affecting even my skin, we are taking a break from Jerome's reintroduction of foods, to see if we can get his skin under control and out of this wicked winter weather. This will delay the return of many of his foods, but will not leave us as confused concerning whether or not a food or the weather is causing his trouble.

Menu Plan: End of the Epiphany Octave

Christ is illumined! Let us shine forth with Him!

We come to the end of the octave of the Epiphany this week, and then go on to Alexander's wedding. What a week! We are very excited and busy.

Please keep us all in your prayers for this very busy week and pray for Alexander and Autumn as they begin their lives together.

Craft On: New Year, New Goals, New News

Joyous New Year to you! As my energy returns, my enthusiasm for life is, too. There is still just as much to do, but I feel much more like I can accomplish it. Or at least most of it. As I do each year, I have made my tentative list of designs I would like to work on, those I would like to publish, ideas for third party submissions, ways I can improve my design business, as well as the projects I want to do just for me or for fun.

That up there is the first sleeve for Imbat. Please excuse the dark, indoor, nighttime photo. I am nearly at the end of the increases, then I will do armscye shaping and shoulder shaping. The second sleeve will be cast on immediately after I bind this off, so I can try to have the sample put together by the third week of this month.

The kids and I are most of the way through Rainbow Valley. I forgot to tell you that Rich and I finally finished One Flesh in December. We only had a chapter and a half, but we hadn't had a chance or the focus to read it until December.

Speaking of focus, though, I am really excited that a fellow designer, Barbara Benson, featured one of my designs in a focus on five quick projects for the New Year. She did a great job making me interested in the other patterns, so I hope you will enjoy it, too. Please check out at her video here:

Menu Plan: 9th Day of Christmas through the Theophany, and Beyond

Christ is illumined! Let us shine forth with Him!

Though we are coming to the end of the holiday, we are enjoying celebrating the Christmas season to its end in February. Theophany is this week, and I am trying to get excited about going to the blessing of the water in the snow and ice and frigid single degree weather. It snowed some more this week. Not too much, but with our temperatures, it stays around for far too long. We hit -12˚F yesterday morning, and Rich had to spend more than four hours getting our pipes and pressure tank back to normal, even with heaters, lights and closed pumphouse doors. Living in a place that stays frigid through April has made me appreciate the snow even less than before. I used to find it pretty, at least, but now I see it and despair. But Christ is born, regardless, and I am keeping that in my mind.

We had so much leftover that some of last week's meals have carried overthrough this week. We return to our normal abstinent diet schedule on Friday, which will be a relief in some ways. It is a good thing to mark our time and even what goes in our mouths by the life of Christ. Jerome's introduction to milk is not going well, but it also coincides with our below zero temperatures and dry, winter weather, so we are not sure which is doing it to him. The humidity and temperatures are supposed to go up this week, so we will keep going with the introduction, and see if he improves. It would be sad for him no longer to be able to have milk, but it doesn't necessarily exclude cheese, since the proteins are used in a different way in them, so we will still try the cheese after this, even if he can't have milk. Please pray for him and for clarity on this issue.
