With fair week last week, not a lot was done around here that didn't have to do with the fair. Besides it being a busy week for us normally, we had very few volunteers at our neighborhood booth, so it was basically our family and another family working the booth with a few other people coming in to help when they could. It was exhausting. I'm just recovering from it, actually.

The project bag would have been finished, except I found a dropped stitch more than 16 rounds down, and it was just too tight to drop down and put it back in place. So, I had to frog a little, and now I'm almost back to where I was before.

Though I haven't finished the coffee cozy for Rich, it is still in my project rotation. I'm hoping to have it finished by next weekend or the week after.

I think I read exactly one page in the Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge, sadly. We were just running all the time. I have been listening to Hercule Poirot short stories that Rich plays at night, though.

This is an almost FO. In fact, it is so close, it might be finished by the end of the day today. It was not only supposed to be finished, but I had planned to have the pattern written and at the editor's already, but I think we are about two weeks from that. Alas. However, I am happy with it. It is a fun, little project and I have designed it to be two different sizes. Watch this space for information on the pattern.

We are in the last few days of the Around the World Stitch Along, and because of the turmoil in our lives, I haven't finished knitting my first project, let alone a second. It is a delightful project, and one I still want to complete, so you will see it here. I think it will be perfect for Rich at work.

Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge is nearly finished! I should finish it today or tomorrow, and next week will have a bit of a review for you!

The coffee cozy has been put in a brief time out. I don't have the bandwidth to focus on the stitch pattern somehow. I think I will pull it out again for my sit and stitch. However, I've picked up Keese again, and though I didn't follow my own instructions and had to correct an error, it is pretty close to finished now. The goal is to have it written for two bag sizes and use the reverse colors on the larger size.

I really thought I would be finished with the Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge by now, but instead I read Recognizing the Stranger, and finished that. Except for where she kind of has to insert her other political views (which are not surprising to me, but means that a lot of the people who really could use her perspective will have an easy way to dismiss her argument), I really thought the lecture was quite good and framed this argument in a way I had not heard/read before.

I wanted to knit a lot more this weekend than I did. However, Rich wanted to give me a birthday weekend with nobody to carry, as he said. We filled it with excellent food and cooking demonstrations at the Bite of Seattle (two days before the shooting, and we are praying for all the victims), a gorgeous day of dancing salsa and bachata on Alki beach, a phenomenal meal at Driftwood, walking on the beach, quiet conversation, raucous laughter, and lots of rest. It really was what I needed after the past five months we've been enduring. So, I don't really have a progress photo for you.

I am basically finished with the base on the coffee cozy, but now I am a little worried I won't have enough yarn to finish it. I might have a UFO that I wanted to frog anyway in this yarn, though. If I can find that, I will be fine.

There should be a lot of knitting time for my birthday, because we are going to get quite a bit of driving when we go dancing. I'm super excited for the dance and the time with Rich in the car while I knit and we talk (and he drives).

Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge is sitting on my nightstand, but I am hoping to get inside it tonight. I'm nearly finished with Last Wool and Testament, which is another happy, little, knitting murder and I'm waiting for the library to bring me Mrs. Pollifax and the Golden Triangle. I started reading the series before Rich, and now he is ahead of me in this book because he listens to it and got the audio version quicker than I did the print version.

The base of the Margaret Tie-Top Tea Cosy is nearly finished, and I think once I get past the basic part of this, the rest of the cozy will go relatively quickly. I hope to have it finished by the end of next week. I want to have this ready for Rich to use with his coffee press at work, since he has to leave it so often. It would have been lovely to have it completed today, which is the 32nd anniversary of our first meeting, but alas, it will be my project with me when we get dinner.

Unfortunately, I had to back track a little on Keese, but it should be correct and on its way in a day or so.

I've been able to read a little more lately, and I think I can finish Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge within the week or by next week, at least. I've read two books since last week. First, I finished Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha, which was exactly what I needed, a light, fun, and silly story.

I also read The Jinn Daughter which is a fairy tale told in the style of the traditional hakawati stories. First, the negative, I wish the author had not chosen to use scatalogical language in the story at all. It was one word, repeated only four or five times in the entire book, but it was so out of place with the rest of the story that it drew you as the reader out from being a participant to being an outsider. She could have used the Arabic word, which would have gotten the point across without the vulgarity, as she did with many other words (not vulgar or crass, just words like nahr instead of river and mote instead of death, etc.). It's not even the word itself that bothers me, but its entire lack of necessity. It had no place in the story - it was just sprinkled in for some reason. Now, the wonderful, the author examines the question: What story would your life tell? This is not the same as what is your life story, and she shows this different question throughout the book and causes the reader to ask the question of herself, as well. I love the use of Arabic storytelling. I love her inclusion of Arabic words instead of trying to find a close approximation in English. I love that she eventually includes kan, كان ياما كان (ya ma kan), the once upon a time of all Arab fairy tales; It was, or it wasn't. Ultimately, this is a fairy tale about motherhood. Like all fairy tales, the monsters aren't real, but the fears are. Rania Hanna is a neuroscientist, and her story is intelligently written. I do not know if she plans to write more fiction, but I hope she does.

This design was sparked by some remarks in the SAL last year and inspired by designs I saw while in Saudi Arabia, and I'm hoping to have it ready to release before the SAL is over this year.

I'm also making Rich a little coffee press cozy for his coffee at work. The Margaret Tie-Top Tea Cosy is one of the delightful designs from my fellows designers. I love the construction she uses, and if you know me, you know I am a sucker for interesting construction.

Not much progress in Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge, but I am about two thirds of the way through Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha. I did, indeed, finish The Fatal Unpleasantness at Netherfield last week. The author managed to keep most of her modernisms out, which is an improvement, but explained the Bingleys and Netherfield, as though the people reading this book weren't doing so because they already love Jane Austen stories, and then created three new sisters for Mr. Bingley. That is insupportable. The stories are still delightful, so I shake my head and roll my eyes a little at the author's ideas of what needs to be changed/added to these people and places and move along.

The Around the World Stitch Along is here! I am looking over projects to make over the next six weeks. That yarn up there is a pile of possibilities. I'm narrowing down my choices right now.

Since I'm attacking Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge at the rapid rate of half or one page every few nights, I may finish by the end of the year. However, I finished Salt Houses and found it beautifully written. There is more profanity and vulgarity in the language of the characters than I would like, but it is understandable in most cases. The only sexuality in it is pertinent to the story, and not done pornographically. I started Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha, but The Fatal Unpleasantness at Netherfield arrived for me from the library, so I think I'm hopping to that.

I started this sweater at the end of March. I was hoping it would be completed at the end of May, or at least by the end of June. There is most of a sleeve. Life is still a bit hard right now. Even knitting is hard right now. Not because it is actually difficult, but because it is difficult to focus, to sit still and do anything. However, I love this sleeve, and I will love the sweater. Whenever I finish it.

In the meantime, I have basically given up on challenging reading, for much the same reason. So, instead, I read another light, happy, little murder, A Dark and Stormy Knit. I didn't love that I picked the killer in the first third of the book. My next book will either be the next in this series or the next Mrs. Pollifax.

I'm past the decorative part of the sleeve on my vintage inspired top. There are only about three inches before shaping the sleeve cap. It's taken far too long to do far too little, but progress is progress. This week was at least as busy as last week, because our granddaughters' aunt and uncle are expecting a baby, and we are helping them. We're still trucking along in our challenges and doing the next right thing. We are in prayer for a lot of people right now and can use a lot of prayer.

Beacuse life got busier again these past couple weeks, I've read about a page in the Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge, and that is it. That is not exactly true, but it's been a page here and there in everything.

I am working behind the scenes on the Around the World Stitch Along, and we kick things off in less than two weeks! I hope you are able to join in the fun with us.

Life has gotten a lot harder for us recently. There is progress being made, but it is gut wrenching and slow and we're all feeling it now. So, I've blocked Warda, tried to start a new one and ran out of yarn. I still haven't woven in the ends on Nisseet. Though I really wanted to have Warda ready for publication a month ago, I think it needs to wait until my mind is in a place that I can handle it. I wanted to have it ready for this year's Around the World Stitch Along, and it will be, but not in time for the first week of it.

Speaking of which, there is still a little time to sign up for the Stitch Along as a participating designer. There is one day left for sign ups, so go on Ravelry to check out the main group and find the planning group or contact an admin. You can also check out our Instagram account for more information. We are especially looking for crochet designers. The crafters will have their chance in a couple weeks, but I will say that we are starting the conversation run up to cast on day.

We've had a lot of sleepless nights. However, that means I got to read more in Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge than I have been. I also finished The Girls of Good Fortune. I really enjoyed the book. Having grown up in Oregon, and knowing the places she referred to in the book made it even better. There were three things I wish she hadn't done, however. If you have paid attention to my criticisms of writers here, you will know that I abhor modernisms in historical books. The author used the words verbiage and impactful (and don't get me started on impactful as a word, anyway). In the 1880s. She also used the word racist, which nobody used then. Even when people were describing what we call racism, they called it racialism and being a racialist. Of course, there had to be modern social politics in there, as well. It wasn't even a natural part of the story, just there to have it. It's like there is someone at modern publishing houses is counting how much of modern morality is in the books before they can be published. However, it is a well written story. She researched the events well, and wove them together with the fictional characters beautifully. I will read more of her books.

I have finished the Nisseet mittens, though I still need to weave in all the ends. Warda has been finished for some time, but I'm finally blocking it so I can give it to a dear friend of mine. I started a second one, and hope to have it finished by this weekend. Other than that, I haven't made any progress on anything else.

I was able to go to Walla Walla with Rich for a work conference, and was able to go on a few winery tours. This photo was taken at one of those wineries, on a gorgeous wooden slab table. It was good to have a small break from our troubles, and that was lovely. Things are ramping up here, and we are still praying for a good outcome. If you could, pray especially tomorrow and around 1:30 pm on June 5.

Another fun break I had was to go to the movies in the actual theater. I've gone to the movies more this year than I have in the previous five years. I've seen The Sheep Detectives twice in the theaters now. First, for Nejat's birthday, and again with a friend from my sit and stitch group. As we suspected, it was far better than the book. I know there is at least one sequel to the book, but with the ways they changed the story for the movie, I don't think they could do a sequel that even really has anything to do with it, but perhaps that is better. If you get a chance to watch it, it is fun. The knits in it are lovely, and it's just a silly, fun movie.

We've had a lot of sleepless nights. However, that means I got to read more in Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge than I have been. I also finished Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station, Irish Recipe for Murder, and Murder Most Irish

I wish I could say I was finished with Warda. We kind of hit the ground running when we got home, and I have barely knit anything since last week. This, and another one in slightly different colors, should be ready to mail this weekend, I hope.

Please continue to pray for our family. We are coming up on some important dates and events and we are praying for the right outcome.

Honestly, except for Morning Prayer, my Prayer Book and Bible, I haven't read anything but an introductory paragraph since we returned.

I returned to my homeland this week. Even though Pacific Northwesterners have made something of a profession of hating Californians, I am a Californian girl, through and through. I was born in Beverly Hills, and lived in Santa Monica and Westwood for the first part of my life, and I always come alive when I am back in LA, smog and all. There is basically no chance I would move to California, between their political and social culture, tax policies, and cost of living, (also, I'm nearly 50, never have had any work done, don't work out, and don't always wear makeup), but I love the climate, the views, the food, the actual cultures there, the shopping, all of it. So, I was a beach bum for a little bit this week, doing my knitting on the beach and at the pool.

It is, of course, a business trip for Rich (this is how we get most vacations around here), but we took Elijah with us as a treat and reward. He's been such a trooper, truly manning up and seeing what has needed to be done during the hard times of the past couple months (and really the last couple years) and doing it without a request from us, without complaint, and we wanted to recognize that. I told him I wanted to go to the beach, the fashion district, and eat well, and would take him wherever he wanted to go. Dominic and Shawn came up to watch our house and the girls at home, so everything would go smoothly and so the animals would be taken care of, as well. We knew it was a huge request to make of them, but they did it quite generously and willingly. And they brought Winnie, so we get to see her sweet little cheeks!

We got to eat delicious food, go to a Maronite Church there, walk around the beach and pier, get a little shopping in, visit museums, and Rich and I even got to dance at a street salsa dance they have weekly. We took Elijah to a VR arcade, and he and I went to a museum and spent some good time together. Now we are back home, and trying to get back into normal schedules.

The top picture is where I was with Warda on Monday, this is where I am today. Sadly, it will not be finished in time to give on Mother's Day, but it will still be sent for it. I ran out of yarn when I was eight rows away from being finished. I've re-written the pattern a bit and have gotten back on track.

I did some more reading in the Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge, peeked a bit into Garden of Truth and read just a tiny bit in Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station.

Not a lot of progress this week. I thought I would get more finished on our trip last week, but was busy with things from home, and when we returned was even more busy than I had been before. However, I did start Warda and think it will be finished in time for Mother's Day.

We have a lot of travel this month. Well, not a lot, but a couple trips. One is back to Los Angeles, which delights me, and another is to Walla Walla, which will also be a lot of fun and a good break for me. We are hoping that that break will let us return to some real progress and positive change in the difficult situations we are navigating right now.

I did weave in the ends on my socks, so they are finished, finished, finished. You can see the mismatch of striping on the feet, but they will be in my shoes.

Unfortunately, because of my delays, the newsletter for April is not going out, and there will be a combination April and May issue going out as soon as both Nisseet and Warda are ready for beta. Life is still kicking our tails, though we are trying to cheerfully and prayerfully endure and overcome.

My reading has still been scant. I've read a little in Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge and peeked into Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station exactly once.

Material Girl is technically finished, but I still need to weave in the ends and block the pair. I have almost finished the first pair of Nisseet, and hope to have them ready for you soon. Rich and I have been on a work trip, and Nisseet was my main knitting while we were away.

There has been hardly any progress on Qidyssat Katrin, and my vintage blouse is moving, but it is slow going. I've had to redo each section of the cuff on the first sleeve multiple times. I'm finally on the smocking for the sleeve, and hope to be able to keep going without going back from here on out.

This is my next project on the docket, though it doesn't look like much. I hope to have Warda ready for beta knitting in time for Mother's Day, so watch this space for announcements regarding that (or better, subscribe to my newsletter below for the first notice). It will be a quick knit, using laceweight yarn to make a lovely card you can give to the mothers in your life, or for a friend's birthday.

I've only opened Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge once in the last week, ditto for Garden of Truth. A few nights, I have been able to peek into Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station, though.

Life is still going on and we are coping as best as we can right now, in our exhaustion and sorrow. I'm not really interested in talking about it on this blog or on my social media, but if you know us, or have an idea of what is going on, I'm are happy to talk to you privately. However, I'm still having a hard time focusing. Any progress I make is a positive right now, in my opinion. So you aren't worried, everyone is healthy, all of us are alive, and nobody is getting a divorce. There are just some hard things happening and we could definitely benefit from your prayers.

My designs are taking a little backseat to life, though I do hope I can get back in the game and work on them more diligently when we get through the roughest parts. So, besides these socks, I am still working on Qiddysat Katrin and Nisseet, and I hope to have Warda ready in the middle of May. If I do this right, it might be ready for beta knitting in time for folks to give it to someone for Mother's Day. The sleeve on my vintage styled blouse is still awaiting my attention, and I'm hoping to get to it tomorrow night at sit and stitch.

I haven't picked up Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge at all. Garden of Truth is still on my nightstand, and I peek in it here and there. The only thing I've really been reading, besides my prayer book and Bible, and much more slowly than I had been before, is Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station.

Right now, the only knitting I can really focus on is the simplest projects. I was trying to match the color striping on the socks, and did pretty well on the cuff. However, I realized I started on the wrong color on the heel, but have decided that since it will be in my shoe, I am not re-doing it. So, this pair of socks is close to finished, and I will be getting back to Nisseet as soon as I can.

Between my exhaustion and aging eyes, it is hard for me to see well enough to pick up the stitches correctly and my focus is so divided that I can't do it while talking to others or watching anything. Perhaps I will get to it Monday, and finally get them finished. The next step will be finalizing the pattern and getting it ready for editing. That also requires focus, so you can see why it's been delayed. It's just been a tiring and challenging time for us. Again, I seek your prayers. It's nothing we can fully discuss publicly, but it isn't a secret, so if you know me, you can contact me about it.

I started the sleeve on a vintage inspired knitted blouse pattern from a 2004 IK that I've wanted to make since it was published. The whole focus issue is making it more difficult for me than it ought to be, but also the pattern does not notate RS or WS on the graph, and there is an instruction for a specific increase which is a little unclear. On the increase, I've just kind of decided how I will do it and will do it consistently, so that is fine, but I have to rip back because of the no indication of RS on the graph, because the first row isn't the right side, and it really messed up my set up.

Qidyssat Katrin is more than half way finished, and I'm on the much simpler side of it. However, again, because of all that is going on, I am careful to work on it when I am most rested, with full light, and few distractions. Which means I haven't worked on it nearly as much as I wanted. These four projects are all I am permitting myself to even consider or work on right now. Too many more, and I would not be able to get anything done. Of these, two are designs and two are other people's designs. Two are fairly simple, two more complicated, which gives me a simple and a more complex project for my "work" week and the same for the weekends.

Though I have read a little in a lot of books, I haven't really sustained much in any. I was trying to finish a happy little murder, but the library took it back before I could finish it. Maybe next week I will have more.

Just because of the life we have led over the past few weeks, and specifically our schedule of this past week, I have not finished either the Niseet mittens or mitts. I am about 750% through the mittens, and about 60% through the mitts, so they should be finished soon enough. Instead, I picked up these UFO socks, and finished the second cuff entirely, and will be able to finish the second foot in the next day or two of liturgies and other meetings.

Please continue to pray for us. Our whole family could use your prayers. This is such a busy and intense time, both spiritually and materially, with all the physical preparations for the Paschal feast, and all the rigor of the services this week, and with the other things going on in our family life right now, it is heavier. It feels like we are going through our own passion. We are looking forward to the joy of the Resurrection and await a resurrection in our lives, as well.
