Craft On: Cables and Keese Beta

My projects on needles and active right now are all cables all the time. One is a sweater for Winnie and one is a stocking for Madelyn. I'd like to get back to my own sweaters, but I have a second stocking to make for Winnie. Because they are Old Calendar, that buys me an extra 13 days, but that is still closer than is comfortable. Rich raised an eyebrow and asked if I really thought I could get both done. The audacity! As though he has seen me have more plans than time before.
The stocking pattern started with 20 inches of i-cord that you were then supposed to pick up stitches from to knit the stocking. I did i-cord while making the stitches, so I wouldn't have to pick up the stitches. I'm not thrilled with my gauge, though, so I am going to go down a needle size and then keep going after that. On the sweater, I thought I would have the second sleeve finished, because I was moving right along on it before, but we've had a rough week, and a busy one, and I haven't been able to focus.

Keese is at my tech editor's and I am hoping to release it soon. Please contact me if you would like a chance to knit this before it is available for purchase. I'm hoping to have at least two beta knitters, to try each size of the project bag. Thank you so much!
I read a short story called Crenshaw, which is a children's story, and was both sad and touching. Other than that, I've still been more scatterbrained in my reading. I've read a little in The Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge and in We Mend With Gold. I even started reading something else, though I decided not to finish it.

Craft On: Sort of Finished

All duplicate stitching is complete. All thumbs are knit. There are still ends to weave in and two mitts to block. However, there are two finished projects I can count, and maybe even get the patterns out for this year. I'd like to make the second size of Keese, to show a larger version, and that might just be my mindless knitting for the next few weeks, as we are going to be deep in difficult times.
I have ripped back to the cuff on Winnie's sweater, but otherwise haven't knit much on it. That will likely come this weekend and remain weekend knitting, when I am not having to focus on other things.
Last week, Rich and I had some time in Montana for a business conference of his, and we really enjoyed the break, the ability to walk in nature, the quiet, and the friends in his colleagues that we've known for between 10 and more than 20 years. It didn't make all our sorrows disappear, but it helped to carry them better. I was able to finish both of these projects, but barely read anything.
Life has been so challenging lately, and the screws are tightening, so my reading has been a lot of little snippets here and there, and nothing super consistent or serious. We are really being put through the wringer right now, and just found out something else that will prolong it.

Craft On: Saba'h al Ward (w'al Yasmin)

I wanted to knit a lot more this weekend than I did. However, Rich wanted to give me a birthday weekend with nobody to carry, as he said. We filled it with excellent food and cooking demonstrations at the Bite of Seattle (two days before the shooting, and we are praying for all the victims), a gorgeous day of dancing salsa and bachata on Alki beach, a phenomenal meal at Driftwood, walking on the beach, quiet conversation, raucous laughter, and lots of rest. It really was what I needed after the past five months we've been enduring. So, I don't really have a progress photo for you.

However, I do have a new pattern for you that is a great quick project for the summer, as a card or framed picture for a special occasion. A beta knitter even made it as a face cloth. Warda is available on PayHip, Ravelry, and will shortly be available on LoveCrafts. As an introductory incentive, there is a coupon code, valid on both PayHip and Ravelry, WardaIntro, for 25% off the price through the end of the day August 5, 2026. Also, for the next couple days, as my 50th birthday gift to you, you can use the code HalfaCentury on both PayHip and Ravelry to receive 50% off of ONE pattern available for individual sale. That coupon is available through the end of the day, July 31, 2026.
Though I only got into the Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge for another few pages, I finished Last Wool and Testament!

Craft On: Seeking Knit and Crochet Designers

Life has gotten a lot harder for us recently. There is progress being made, but it is gut wrenching and slow and we're all feeling it now. So, I've blocked Warda, tried to start a new one and ran out of yarn. I still haven't woven in the ends on Nisseet. Though I really wanted to have Warda ready for publication a month ago, I think it needs to wait until my mind is in a place that I can handle it. I wanted to have it ready for this year's Around the World Stitch Along, and it will be, but not in time for the first week of it.

Speaking of which, there is still a little time to sign up for the Stitch Along as a participating designer. There is one day left for sign ups, so go on Ravelry to check out the main group and find the planning group or contact an admin. You can also check out our Instagram account for more information. We are especially looking for crochet designers. The crafters will have their chance in a couple weeks, but I will say that we are starting the conversation run up to cast on day.
We've had a lot of sleepless nights. However, that means I got to read more in Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge than I have been. I also finished The Girls of Good Fortune. I really enjoyed the book. Having grown up in Oregon, and knowing the places she referred to in the book made it even better. There were three things I wish she hadn't done, however. If you have paid attention to my criticisms of writers here, you will know that I abhor modernisms in historical books. The author used the words verbiage and impactful (and don't get me started on impactful as a word, anyway). In the 1880s. She also used the word racist, which nobody used then. Even when people were describing what we call racism, they called it racialism and being a racialist. Of course, there had to be modern social politics in there, as well. It wasn't even a natural part of the story, just there to have it. It's like there is someone at modern publishing houses is counting how much of modern morality is in the books before they can be published. However, it is a well written story. She researched the events well, and wove them together with the fictional characters beautifully. I will read more of her books.

Craft On: Back in the Saddle

I have finished the Nisseet mittens, though I still need to weave in all the ends. Warda has been finished for some time, but I'm finally blocking it so I can give it to a dear friend of mine. I started a second one, and hope to have it finished by this weekend. Other than that, I haven't made any progress on anything else.

I was able to go to Walla Walla with Rich for a work conference, and was able to go on a few winery tours. This photo was taken at one of those wineries, on a gorgeous wooden slab table. It was good to have a small break from our troubles, and that was lovely. Things are ramping up here, and we are still praying for a good outcome. If you could, pray especially tomorrow and around 1:30 pm on June 5.
Another fun break I had was to go to the movies in the actual theater. I've gone to the movies more this year than I have in the previous five years. I've seen The Sheep Detectives twice in the theaters now. First, for Nejat's birthday, and again with a friend from my sit and stitch group. As we suspected, it was far better than the book. I know there is at least one sequel to the book, but with the ways they changed the story for the movie, I don't think they could do a sequel that even really has anything to do with it, but perhaps that is better. If you get a chance to watch it, it is fun. The knits in it are lovely, and it's just a silly, fun movie.
We've had a lot of sleepless nights. However, that means I got to read more in Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge than I have been. I also finished Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station, Irish Recipe for Murder, and Murder Most Irish

Craft On: Knitting on the Road

Material Girl is technically finished, but I still need to weave in the ends and block the pair. I have almost finished the first pair of Nisseet, and hope to have them ready for you soon. Rich and I have been on a work trip, and Nisseet was my main knitting while we were away.
There has been hardly any progress on Qidyssat Katrin, and my vintage blouse is moving, but it is slow going. I've had to redo each section of the cuff on the first sleeve multiple times. I'm finally on the smocking for the sleeve, and hope to be able to keep going without going back from here on out.

This is my next project on the docket, though it doesn't look like much. I hope to have Warda ready for beta knitting in time for Mother's Day, so watch this space for announcements regarding that (or better, subscribe to my newsletter below for the first notice). It will be a quick knit, using laceweight yarn to make a lovely card you can give to the mothers in your life, or for a friend's birthday.
I've only opened Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge once in the last week, ditto for Garden of Truth. A few nights, I have been able to peek into Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station, though.

Craft On: Simple Gifts

So, I over shot on Rich's second sock. It's kind of the first sock, which was already completely knit, but in the wrong size. I frogged it down to the right spot on the toe increases, and started knitting again. Then, I knit about two inches past where I needed to start the heel. So, you can see that my mind is really firing on all cylinders right now.

Now that Amira's birthday has past and I have given her the mitts, I can share the finished picture with you! These are made with a burgundy Classic Elite Lush from my ancient stash. It is truly lush, with a fiber content of half angora and half merino wool. Our weather just got colder again, so I know these will help keep her warm at work and when she is out in the frigid air.

I had intended to start knitting the larger version of Saint Patrick using this yarn for my Malabrigo March project this month. I might still begin it in this month, but with everything else going on, it will not be finished this month. If you don't already subscribe to my newsletter, check out the link below, as this pattern will be re-released in an expanded form with both sizes of the shawl when the rights to it return to me. My newsletter subscribers will receive an extra discount when that happens.
Please keep praying for our family. We are being held up by those prayers. We are seeing God's hand in our lives and the lives of our family members in so many ways. If you want to help in a financial way, please consider checking out my stash and book offerings on Ravelry.
We still haven't finished Three Bags Full, but we are close. When I reminded Rich that it was written by one of his people, he said it made the whole story make more sense.
Our local theater has been running Tolkein Tuesdays, and it has made me want to read the books again. We require our kids to read the books before they see the films, so Nejat finished Fellowship of the Ring just as we drove to the parking spot at the theater. She literally finished the last paragraph when Rich got the car in park. Unfortunately, she didn't finish Two Towers in time for that movie, but we do own them at home, and said she could watch them with us as soon as she finished the book. If, by some miracle, she finishes that and Return of the King, or even just to the point before the scouring of the Shire (Blast You, Peter Jackson for leaving that out of the films!), we will let her watch.

Craft On: Agony of Da Feet?

Folks, I think I hate surface crochet. I might have to give up on my qualifier sock, because I just don't think I can finish in time without cheating it somehow. Before I rip anything out, though, I will try it with a smaller crochet hook and see if that helps. If not, I fear I will not even make it as a cheer leader this year.

I have my surprise project, a couple designs, and another pair of socks I could work on, but I had planned on knitting mostly these this week, so now I'm a bit at odd ends. However, I did take out the too short braided tassel on Rich's defend and resist hat and re-did it with 15" strands instead of the 11" ones recommended in the pattern and I like it much better. Rich asked if it was Finished, finished, finished, and when I said it was, he immediately tucked it into his coat pocket so he could wear it in the cold.
Saturday, we woke up to our water heater leaking and flooding four rooms in our basement. We got to pay for emergency weekend plumbing and a replacement that was nearly twice the cost it would have been because the state of Washington has outlawed high capacity water heaters for homes, so we had to buy a commercial model. Please pray for us. (Also, I am offering a discount on all my individually sold patterns as a flood sale with the coupon code FLOOD on both Ravelry and PayHip, if you are so inclined to help replenish our emergency fund). The good news is there was a dependable, honest, helpful plumber who was able to bring us the water heater and replace ours in just hours. We have water, and it is even hot. Glory to God!
My nighttime reading is still Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge, which is further justifying my admiration of him as a president and a man. I'm fairly close to finishing Mrs. Pollifax on Safari, though I've slowed down even in this with our busy past couple weeks.

Craft On: Ash Wednesday Knitting

I have finished Rich's Defend and Resist cap. I am not sure how I feel about the tassel. I love the red, white and blue in it, but it seems short. So, after I block it, if it hasn't relaxed a little, I will take it out and put a new, longer, tassel on the hat.

After not qualifying for two years in a row, and not even trying last year, I am in again for Sock Madness this year. My goal is to make it as a cheerleader, because then I can modify the patterns as I wish. However, first I have to finish at least one sock. I basically forgot how to read a chart today, and started reading it from the top. The sock is back on track now, and I am happy with the pattern. Most of it is straight forward sock knitting and stranded color work, but there is an interesting heel that will need attention, and the vertical red stripes in the design (which are not there yet) are made by using surface crochet.
At the imposition of ashes today, I worked a little on my surprise project, but I haven't touched Qidyssat Katrin or Mawqid at all today. I think that is on the docket for tomorrow and this weekend.
There hasn't been much progress in Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge, but now that we are finished with our Mardi Gras doughnut feast, and we are having a quiet Ash Wednesday night, I think I'll get more reading time tonight. I did finish A Palm for Mrs. Pollifax, and have started Mrs. Pollifax on Safari. There was one thing that kind of annoyed me about A Palm for Mrs. Pollifax, and that is that the author made up a country in the Arab world, used region/city names from two different countries, instead of just picking one and going with it. All the other locations have been real and historical.

Craft On: Birthday Sweater and Baby Socks

Last week I did end up finishing up and blocking Madelyn's sweater, and I was able to give it to her this week, nearly a month after her birthday. She was a bit hesitant to put it on at first, but then didn't want to take it off once it was on her. What a delight she is! Now she and Amelia both have her birthday sweaters and Winifred will have one this year, as well, I hope.

I am nearly finished with the first pair of baby socks for Winifred, and have half a pair for Madelyn made, too. If you want to make these, you might want to make sure you have subscribed to my newsletter (see below).
Most of the books I have open are a little more demanding of me than I can handle in this socio-political climate, so I took a moment to open up the Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge and read about the only president I admire without qualification. I'm hoping I don't find out he was a jerk of a man, but I admire his policies and principles. Also, after a long bout of books recommended that I ended up not liking, I picked up The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax, recommended by another crafting blogger, from the library and am finding it delightful. I'm not all the way through it, so maybe I will change my mind, but for now, it is a fun, interesting, but not too taxing book.

Craft On: Four Weeks to Christmas

Well, Prettyish Wilderness isn't finished yet, but I hope to have it finished in time to at least block in when I arrive. The bear paw mitts are finished now, and ready for our Old Calendar Christmas with Dominic and Shawn. I will be doing a lot of knitting on the plane, including that jaunty little scarfette I've started.
Also, we had our early Thanksgiving this past weekend and got to see Dominic, Shawn, and Winifred, who is smiling and laughing and has the best dimples ever! This didn't leave as much knitting time as I wanted, but holding Winnie was. way better. We had to say goodbye to them yesterday, but will see them again in January.

As we are all getting ready for holidays, I am offering 25 patterns for 25% off through November 26, 2025, at the end of the day (PST). I have a sale bundle both on Ravelry and on PayHip. Both use the same coupon code, ChristmasJoy, which can be used on any and all of the patterns in the bundle.
I am also holding a Small Business Saturday Sale between the beginning of the day on November 29 through the end of the day December 1, 2025, PST. The coupon code Gratitude will give you $5.00 off a one time purchase of $6.00 or more on Ravelry, and $4.00 off a purchase of $5.00 or more on PayHip.

Craft On: Finishing, Finally!

It was Amelia's third birthday this past weekend, and I was able to give her her sweater, and she loved it! It made me so happy to see her enjoy it. She told me the bows on the cuffs were like butterflies! There are pictures of her in it which show the scallops better, but I loved her impish delight in this picture (I have permission to share her photos here, and limited permission to share pictures of Winifred - just so you know why the photos I have shared are oriented the way they are).

The bear paw mittens are made (again) and I think they are finally the way I want them. I will work on the claws and pads this week. This is the fifth or sixth iteration of the mittens, though. I will use the same dark brown wool for the claws and pads as I did in the sweater. (That giant flower is one of three from a centerpiece I won at a work related dinner with Rich last night - we also came home with ten! bottles of wine from that dinner).
I began both Al Qidyssat Katrin min al-Iskandaria (Saint Catherine of Alexandria) and Prettyish Wilderness this past week. Well, I restarted the first, and began the latter. I really like the gray of Katrin. It is purple based and has some beige and tan and a little pink in it, so it isn't so one dimensional. The pinks and champagnes in the yarn for the shawl is quite feminine and delightful. Both of these are intended for some of my extended family members. The mittens should be finished by this weekend, I think, and then I will focus more on these two. Prettyish Wilderness will be my evening and weekend knitting.
I read The Rushworth Family Plot and enjoyed it, with the same issues I have had with the other books. She slams modernism into the story, and dithers about whether or not using the words slave and slave holder is too triggering, while missing things like how calling a woman Mrs. Caroline Allerdyce (or Mrs. Fanny Bertram, etc.) would be presenting her as a divorced woman in that time. Even though there were people who dissented from the moral and social norms of the regency era, we know that they did not speak and act the way she portrays. The author simply does not trust her readers to come to the "right" conclusions so has to stop story telling to lecture. She simply cannot help herself, it seems, and also tends to force modernist thinking into all the stories. It constantly takes you out of the world she is creating and the time she is representing, so you never fully forget you are reading a story, and never simply become a part of it. All that said, I still do enjoy the intertwining of the characters from Jane Austen's novels, the futures we get to imagine in these books, and especially the characters of Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy (though I think the autism angle is a bit over the top and forced, much like the rest of the modernist ideals she overlays on the story elsewhere). These books are fiction, and supposed to be stories rather than sermons. I wish modern authors spent as much time on the story telling as they do on moralizing. It is quite possible to get the moral across without being didactic.

Craft On: Mostly Finished

Crossandra is finished! Well, I still need to weave in ends and block it. When I can share a picture of Amelia in it, I will.
The bear paw mittens are knit, but I might have to make them a touch longer, so they will fit her in the winter, before making the paw embellishments and claw embroidery. In fact, I might just make a whole new pair of mittens, and save these for another baby at another time.
I'll be casting on Saint Catherine of Alexandria again tonight or tomorrow. If you are interested in beta knitting this design (which is a regrade for women's sizing of the pattern I made for babies and children), please let me know. I will have a beta knit as soon as I have the sample made and the pattern back from my technical editor. Because of when I want to release the pattern, the beta will not require you to make the entire garment, but there will be bonuses for those who do.
I've finished 100 Things We've Lost to the Internet and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is, of course, a subjective list, and certainly not inclusive of all things which we've lost or which have changed, but her insights into what is gone and how it has changed our world is the best part.

Craft On: Winnie's Baptism!

She was beautiful, of course! I finished the gown in time, and even found the right buttons for it. I started a headband for her based on the gown pattern, because I knew I wouldn't have time to make a bonnet, but didn't get her head measurement in time and just guestimated, so it was too small. It is on Shawn's wrist in that photo.

My other projects are the bear paw mittens (which I have started 4 times!) to match the bear sweater, and finishing Crossandra, which is nearly there. I am finishing off the second sleeve with its box pleat and scallops, then will work the neck and make the little bows on the sleeves. I keep trying to make the mittens too large, but I think I have them at the right size now. The bear sweater and mittens are for Winnie at Christmas, and Crossandra is for Amelia's birthday. I do also want to start both my re-graded Saint Catherine of Alexandria and the Prettyish Wilderness Shawl.

Just a reminder, since I finished Saint Patrick, I am seeking beta knitters. If you are interested in beta knitting this shawl, I would love your help. Please e-mail me for more information.
My reading is slowing down right now, but I am enjoying a book recommended by a friend, 100 Things We've Lost to the Internet. It is a bit nostalgic, a bit revelatory, and has prompted me to think of those things I would reckon as lost from that time before.

Craft On: Butterflies and Baptisms

The baptismal gown is knit, with ends woven in, and bathing. There is still blocking to do, and then I will sew on the buttons. She is finished! I will share finished, finished, finished photos after Winnie is baptized.

Next on my list are to knit the bear paw mittens to match the bear sweater, finish Crossandra, start a Prettyish Wilderness shawl (by Linette Grayum) for my aunty, and start the adult sized Saint Catherine (which I hope to have ready for beta in a month or so). I will be casting on the mittens tonight. They might even be finished by the end of tomorrow night or Saturday.

Just a reminder, since I finished Saint Patrick, I am seeking beta knitters. If you are interested in beta knitting this shawl, I would love your help. Please e-mail me for more information.
I've finished The Murder at the Vicarage, and am still reading here and there with other books. The Murder at the Vicarage was such a wonderful book. I've watched the Miss Marple shows and love them, but reading the books is so much better. This will not be my last Miss Marple read. The story has so much more depth than the television renditions, and the characters are much more full.

Craft On: Travel Knitting and Fair News

Since I last participated in Unraveled Wednesday, we had fair week, Winifred was born, Jerome had major jaw surgery, I went down to help Dominic and Shawn and hold Winnie as much as I could, we have gone to a couple weddings, one work trip, it's has been a busy time. What have I done since I last posted? A lot, actually. I finished the bear sweater for Winnie, which is quite appropriate. I will be working on matching mitts for her, too.

I finished Saint Patrick, which will be published in an online magazine in December. If you are interested in beta knitting this shawl, I would love your help. Please e-mail me for more information.

Because of trying to get Saint Patrick ready for photography, I had a late start on the baptismal gown, but I did start it, and I am hustling to finish it. Her baptism is in just over a week! I'm further along than that photo shows, because it is literally all I am knitting at the moment. When I am finished with this, I will start the mitts.
For fair week, our family made a good showing. Rich even entered some of his plants and produce and won first prizes for all but one (second for his Persian basil - we think because they expected it to look like Italian basil). A couple of the girls entered baked goods and received first place, plus some art work which also won almost all first prizes. I entered several baked goods myself, plus a couple of my finished samples from this past year, all with first prize ribbons, as well.
This past month was a good one for my reading! I finished: Taco USA (except for where he tried to write about religion, he really showed a lot of knowledge; his religious knowledge wasn't so great and caused him to make errors of interpretation, as well), The One and Only GooGoosh, Poirot Investigates, Towards Zero (read it, rather than watch the execrable television series), Regency Etiquette (this was delightful!), and The Forgotten Bookshop in Paris (I enjoyed this, but I hated the marital relationship. It didn't have to be the way it was, but it seems that modern authors need to have bad marriages and broken ones in every story). I'm reading a few things now, both fiction and non-fiction. I'm working through the sad, but important, Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, as well as some more Poirot and Miss Marple, as lighter reading when I need a break from the heaviness of the non-fiction.
