Menu Plan: Third Sunday of Advent - Gaudete (Joy Sunday)

Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete. Modestia vestra nota sit omnibus hominibus: Dominus enim prope est. Nihil solliciti sitis: sed in omni oratione et obsecratione cum gratiarum actione petitiones vestræ innotescant apud Deum. Benedixisti Domine terram tuam: avertisti captivitatem Jacob.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Let your forbearance be known to all, for the Lord is near at hand; have no anxiety about anything, but in all things, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God. Lord, you have blessed your land; you have turned away the captivity of Jacob. — Philippians 4:4–6; Psalm 85 (84):1

Rejoice! And again, I say, rejoice! This is our little break in the darkness as we prepare for the Light to enter the world. This is a reminder that our fasting and preparation are in joyful expectation of the Lord who has come, and who is coming. He will redeem the earth and resurrect the faithful to life. This is not a fast of strict penitence, but of self examination and preparation to meet our Savior with joy. We are still in the Advent anticipation, and still busy with fasting, praying and almsgiving, but are also taking time to remember the happiness that awaits us in His Incarnation and return in glory. Life got in the way of our getting our tree and putting it up with lights for Gaudete Sunday, but we are going with Alexander and Autumn and Amelia to get trees for both our houses together. We will do the normal Christmas Eve decorating of the tree with the older kids next week.

We had a Christmas party to attend last night and broke the fast for the law of hospitality. We ended up coming home with two smoked turkey carcasses. Since we tend to loosen or break the fast on Sunday evenings with our parish family, as most are not required to keep the fast, we decided to make a creamy, smoked turkey soup to share for dinner.

This whole Advent has been racing. Regardless, Christ will come and come again. May your fast be fruitful, so you may welcome the Christ Child in your heart and home, and prepare for His coming in glory!

Normally, we would be putting up our tree with the lights today, as we used to do at our former home, in honor of Gaudete Sunday. Nutcracker kind of threw a wrench in that for us, so we will be getting our tree sometime this week, and putting up the lights, then doing our normal decorating on Christmas Eve after the liturgy.

This whole Advent has been going quickly and we've been a little off our normal observance. We didn't do any of our Jesse Tree devotions at all. Regardless, Christ will come and come again.

May your fast be fruitful, so you may welcome the Christ Child in your heart and home, and prepare for His coming in glory!

Thank you to those who prayed for the return of Amira's wallet and who have been praying for my health. Her wallet was returned Monday, and it seems like it was more of a mischievous prank than outright theft. That is frustrating, but at least it wasn't malicious. Also, I am improving, little by little, day by day. I have found that when I have added sugar (with the exception of honey), that I am set back pretty immediately. Even a small amount brings on the coughing and exhaustion, so I am limiting it severely. The Advent fast helps with that, but the Saint Nicholas feast did not.

As a reminder, we are a little more relaxed about the fast during Advent, so if you are looking for the strictest meal plans, I will not be as helpful to you. However, we are keeping the strict fast on Wednesdays and Fridays and are doing as much without dairy and egg and fish as we can, with some leeway for our kids (and, this year, for me, too, as I recover), even as we have meat on Sundays (mostly for economia, as we usually provide a shared meal at church with folks who do not necessarily all keep the fast). There are the winter Ember days this week, so we will have a stricter fast on those days, and those who can will fast entirely.

Menu Plan: Gaudete Sunday

It is Joy Sunday, and I am choosing joy today. It is doubly hard this year, but it will come.

We have had many good things come to us this week, so it is easy to have gratitude, which becomes joy.

Menu Plan: Third Sunday in Advent, Gaudete Sunday

Here we are at Gaudete Sunday, Joy Sunday, more than half way through Advent. I'm trying to keep meals fairly simple this week and use a lot of what we have at home. We are giving ourselves a few treats, for this bright spot during the fast. Before we moved, we used to put up our tree on this Sunday, and string it with lights. Now that we live in a smaller house, we tend to get our tree closer to Christmas Eve.

Rich and I were out of town for much of last week. He had another conference, this time he spoke at it. He did a great job, from what I hear. I wasn't there to hear him in person. We went over his presentation together, had him speak through it, and work out issues with his displays, and I did some editing to help. However, several people at the evening events during the conference made a point of coming to him and telling him how much they enjoyed it and how inspiring it was, both to them, but also to their commissioners who began to see other possibilities with port properties. That was gratifying for him, but also for me, as I am so proud of him and know how he values my eyes and assistance in his work. Anyway, we ate out for dinner at these events for most of the nights, while our kids were at home with friends who did an amazing job cooking and running the house while I was gone.

Menu Plan: Third Week of Advent

We are at the third Sunday in Advent, Gaudete Sunday, Joy Sunday. We lit the rose colored candle tonight. Usually, this is the night we put the lights on our Christmas tree, but this year we don't have ours yet. We usually try to get ours on this weekend. This is a little high note of joy, a break, in the fast. Often churches have a lessons and carols service on this night.

As I have been promising Rich an apple pie for months, I put one together for him tonight. It's been a pretty good, restful day for us, for which we are very thankful. What is on your menu this week? Menu Plan : Third Week of Advent

Joy! It is Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent. This is a little pause in the fast to remember to await our Lord with joy. We are still in the Advent anticipation, and still busy with fasting, praying and almsgiving, but are also taking time to remember the happiness that awaits us in His Incarnation and return in glory.

We celebrated this break in our fast by eating all sorts of treats today that we normally don't have during Advent. The rest of the week is still a normal week of the Advent fast. Also, there are three Ember days this week. These are days of fasting and praying that occur each season, for increase of faith, for conversions, for increase in vocations and for special intentions. If you are not fasting from meat on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, these are days to do so, or simply increase your fasting. If you are already fasting from meat, either make the days vegan or fast completely from food. If you cannot fast from food completely, fast from one or more meals that day. These are days especially dedicated to prayer. Begin with penitence. Generally speaking, since Wednesdays and Fridays are traditionally meat fast days anyway, so during Ember days, they would become full fast days. Fridays are even supposed to be full fast days during Lent for those who are able. Obviously, Good Friday is a complete fast day. Christmas Eve is a meat fast day, regardless of what day it falls during the week, the fast is broken at the evening mass. Jesus presumed we would fast and pray regularly. Fasting is not an option as a Christian, but something we are expected to do.

Oh, in the interest of preserving your faith in the internets, we did not have the fish tacos on Saturday, but Rich baked some halibut steaks with salt, champagne vinegar, safflower oil, thyme, smoked paprika and panko. He served it with rice and steamed green beans. It was delicious. Also, on Friday, it turned out that we didn't have as many eggs as I thought we did, so I made a kind of spanikopita themed bread pudding which was also wonderful. I'll post both recipes soon.

Enjoy this week's menu and feel free to ask any questions. What is on your menu this week? If you want a recipe, ask and I will provide it as soon as I can. If there are any starred recipes, I will follow up separately with a weekly recipe round up on Saturday.

Menu Plan: Third Week of Advent

We are truly rejoicing this Gaudete Sunday, as Yasmina was baptized this morning. We were able to go to our home church back on the west side as our bishop was visiting, and he did the honors for us. I was also able to surprise my prayer group by showing up on time just like normal, with the whole family. I didn't even mention to them that we were coming into the area. What fun that was! The looks on their faces were priceless. We weren't able to fit in everything we wanted to do or all the people we wanted to see in three short days, but it was good to see the folks we did see.

I was going to schedule a bean week challenge this week, but our plans were shifted quite a bit by the baptism, so I think I'm just going to call it for this month and try again in January. We are learning exactly how cold cold is. -2 has been the lowest temperature so far, this month, but we hear it is normal to see lows around -17 and -20 in January. I'm glad our house is well stocked.

We did get our tree this weekend, but we only got home this evening, so we haven't put it up yet. We have three Ember days this week, so Wednesday and Friday will be 24 hour fasts and Saturday will be a sun up to sun down fast for us. The food those days will be for our children who do not fast fully. What is on your menu this week? If you want a recipe, ask and I will provide it as soon as I can. Menu Plan Monday: Third Week of Advent

This is pretty late. Rich and I fell asleep in the living room reading last night. We have both been so wiped out, fighting illness (it hasn't won yet!) and absent minded. I forgot to thaw the meat for yesterday's dinner, so it has become today's dinner.

This is a rather strict fast week, with three full fast days, and even with only Rich fasting, it's not like we are going to feast in front of him. We are still making all sorts of treats for Christmas gifts this week, though. Which will go into airtight storage or the freezer until we can eat them, the actual gifts will be packaged and sent away.
If you want a recipe, ask and I will provide it as soon as I can.
