Couldn't Let This Go

Even though I have no time today, and should be cleaning house, I had to post this.

Evidently it is a-okay to teach Buddhist religious practices to elementary and middle school children in the public schools, but it's really dangerous and bad to allow high school children to have student led prayers, wear crucifixes or mention Jesus in their graduation speeches.

Reason 4,738,915,206 to either homeschool or put your kids in a private school of your choosing.

There was an elementary school not too far from here about a year and a half ago that decided to do a 4 or 6 week unit on Islam. The kids had to memorize various prayers, choose islamic names, and they were invited to fast as Muslims do during Ramadan. There was very little outcry until eventually someone noticed and complained.

I just can't fathom how school folks can think stuff like this is appropriate! Can you imagine the furor if the school was teaching everyone the Lord's Prayer and having them choose saints names or something?

I totally agree with you. It is ridiculous what passes for acceptable in America all in the name of multiculturalism. I don't think any type of religion should be taught in a public school. That is why there is home school or private school. And I am so into both!

I don't have children yet and haven't had to make schooling decisions, but I do have some concerns. How do we, as Christians, take seriously the command to "go into all the world" if we are segregating our children from the world at such a young age?
As for teaching Islam in the elementary school, that does seem a little over the top. But after living in the Muslim world for two years I realized that the major cause of problems between the Muslim and Western world is lack of knowledge. Neither side truly understands the other. I don't think education about other religions is harmful and that educating ourselves and our children about other religions and cultures is a good start to the elusive world peace everyone is seeking.
